The Miami County Sheriff's Office detective section is currently comprised of one detective lieutenant who is in charge of the section, two detectives assigned to general assignment which includes all major crimes except narcotics, two narcotics detectives, and one detective assigned to Miami County Job & Family Services through a contract.

Detectives perform investigative duties such as gathering facts and collecting evidence typically on felony crimes such as sex offenses, violent crimes, drug offenses, and death investigations.  Detectives must write reports and maintain meticulous records that will be needed if they testify in court.  They receive special training in interview and interrogation, forensics for crime scene processing, financial crimes, and other investigative procedures.
